11th November: An Explanation of the Sint Maarten Holiday in The Netherlands
This holiday is not celebrated all over The Netherlands, because its regional, but it is celebrated in my region (West-Friesland, which is found in the province of Noord- Holland, not in Friesland). I grew up celebrating Sint Maarten and it was - and still is - one of my favourite Dutch holidays.
Introduction of Sint Maarten
Sint Maarten is one of the many holidays that we have in The Netherlands, which is celebrated every 11th of November. and it is said that it has old Roman and Germanic roots. Saint Martin was a Roman soldier that was baptised as an adult and became a bishop - even though he didn’t want to: this holiday is named after him.
